Edeka explains usurious price: cucumber for 3.29 euros causes a stir

A Tiktok video showing a cucumber in a Hamburger Edeka continues to cause outrage. The reason is the proud price of 3.29 euros for the vegetables. According to an Edeka-Nord spokeswoman, however, it is an isolated case.

A Hamburg Edeka market offered a cucumber for 3.29 euros. Apparently, the high price was not well received by customers. One customer was so upset that she posted a Tiktok video about it. Outraged reactions quickly followed. "Pretty expensive for green bowl water," wrote one user. "If you can get cucumber salad anywhere, you know people are wealthy," another. Basically, the commentators recommended simply leaving the vegetables lying around.

To smooth things over, Edeka Nord made a defensive statement: "After consulting the relevant market staff, we can confirm that the product was sold at the time it was recorded," said a spokeswoman for the t-online portal. However, this is an isolated case. The price has since been corrected downwards. In addition, she emphasized that a cucumber currently costs 2.99 euros in most Edeka stores. As outraged as the reactions to the cucumber video were, the question naturally arises as to whether the small correction and the statement will calm the situation.

In general, food prices have risen sharply in recent months. Compared to the previous year, it was 21.8 percent, reported the Federal Statistical Office. Weather-related yield losses and increased energy costs were among the drivers. When the prices will recover again cannot be answered with the current status.
