Fixed verdict in Heilbronn: New Year's Eve attacker must be in prison for nine months

Just a few days after the riots on New Year's Eve, a court in Heilbronn imposed a hefty prison sentence on a perpetrator. After throwing firecrackers dangerously, he defied and attacked police officers. There is a reason for the quick verdict.

The District Court of Heilbronn has sentenced a 30-year-old to nine months in prison after incidents on New Year's Eve. The verdict was already made on Thursday, as several media reports unanimously, and thus less than a week after the riots on New Year's Eve, which took place in many places and also in Heilbronn. The man was convicted of "assaulting a police officer".

The 30-year-old set off uncontrolled fireworks on New Year's Eve at Heilbronn's market square. He is said to have thrown firecrackers into a group of children, as "Bild" writes, citing a court spokesman. However, nobody was injured. Police officers wanted to record his personal details. The man resisted and attacked the officers. According to the court, he had a knife and tear gas with him, as the "SWR" says.

The man was immediately taken into custody after being brought before a magistrate. The public prosecutor's office in Heilbronn applied for a decision in accelerated proceedings at the responsible district court, which is why the man had to answer in court just a few days later.

It was the first case that was negotiated as part of the model project launched at the beginning of the year to promote accelerated proceedings in Heilbronn, according to a joint press release by the Heilbronn public prosecutor's office and the Heilbronn police headquarters. According to the statement, the aim: "The accelerated procedure should make perpetrators aware that they will react quickly and consistently."

After a short hearing, according to "Bild", the verdict was suspended without probation. So the man has to serve the time. According to the court spokesman, he was already under “double probation”. The judgment is not yet final.
