Investigators hope for clues: Sonja Engelbrecht's killer probably had local knowledge

Sonja Engelbrecht has been missing for 26 years - until her skeleton is discovered in a crevice in Kipfenberg in Upper Bavaria. Investigations now show that her killer apparently knew the area well. The police are hoping for clues.

According to investigators, the murderer of Sonja Engelbrecht from Munich, who was killed 28 years ago, was apparently well acquainted with the hiding place of her body in Kipfenberg in Upper Bavaria. The storage location in a crevice in a forest is so remote that no hiker or mushroom picker can just pass by, said the head of the Munich homicide squad, Stephan Beer, in Munich. In addition, the perpetrator was probably busy with construction or renovation work. This was revealed by the analysis of sacks, foil and the adhesive tape with which the body had been packed. "There was also paint on it," Beer said.

The 19-year-old disappeared without a trace after meeting friends in Munich on April 10, 1995. In 2022 her skeleton was discovered in a crevice in a forest near Kipfenberg (district of Eichstätt). Investigators are currently assuming that the then 19-year-old was the victim of a sex crime. Next Wednesday, the murder case will be discussed in the special edition of "Aktenzeichen XY... Cold Cases".

The investigators are hoping for clues about a blanket, the remains of which were found on the skeleton. The black and blue polyacrylic cover has a striking plant pattern. A reward of 10,000 euros was offered for tips that led to the investigation of the crime. The special program "Cold Cases" starts at 8.15 p.m. on ZDF and in the live stream in the ZDF media library.
