A fire broke out in a patient room on the third floor of a Berlin retirement home. The fire brigade quickly got the flames under control, but found a woman's body in the room. Two other people had to go to the hospital.

A woman died in a fire in a retirement home in Berlin-Neukölln. According to the Berlin police, two other people were injured but rescued. Accordingly, the previous investigations point to negligent arson.

According to initial findings, the fatality is very likely to be a 74-year-old resident. According to the fire brigade, the fire also broke out in her room on the third floor. A final identification is still pending, it said.

What happened? According to the emergency services, a nurse at the retirement home reported the fire in the home around 6:40 a.m. The room on the third floor was in full fire, the fire brigade extinguished the flames there. The fire was quickly brought under control. The emergency services then found the dead woman in the room.

A 97-year-old resident and the 32-year-old nurse were taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. Two other seniors also had to leave their room. According to the police, they had no complaints and were later accommodated on other floors of the care facility.

More than 100 emergency services were on site, the police cordoned off the area around the retirement home on Schudomastrasse in Berlin-Neukölln.
