Riots at Box-Film: Police sense Tiktok trend behind cinema riots

Snacks are flying in Essen and Bremen, in Hamburg even fists are said to be flying: during the screening of the boxing drama "Creed III - Rocky's Legacy" there are riots in some cinemas. The visitors always push it so far that the film has to be stopped. The police suspect a Tiktok trend behind it.

"Creed III - Rocky's Legacy" has been running in German cinemas for a few days. In some venues, visitors rioted during the screening of the boxing drama - in Essen, in Hamburg and in Bremen. All to the chagrin of the other guests who only wanted to see the film. It was ultimately canceled in all affected cinemas. The tumults themselves are said to have always turned out differently, from food fights to physical violence.

In a cinema at Hamburg Dammtor, for example, there is said to have been a particularly violent case. There, an alleged mass brawl led to a major police operation. An employee of the cinema called the officials, according to a police spokesman. Officers arrived shortly after midnight but could not locate any of those involved. And although the situation had calmed down and around 200 people were sitting in the cinema, the operator decided to cancel the performance. Most people probably didn't expect the abrupt end. The situation is similar in a Bremen cinema.

There, the "Creed III" demonstration is said to have developed into a stress test for everyone who just wanted to see the film over two days. The first time, two groups of youngsters clashed. The trigger was a dispute over seats. Some are said to have drawn knives and pepper spray. Four young people had to be treated by paramedics for respiratory irritation, two people were arrested. Apparently no one was stabbed.

There is said to have been a video of the second incident on the Tiktok social media platform. In it, a visitor dumped a bucket of nachos on the other guests. There were scuffles and riots. The police finally arrived with a large contingent and then calmed the visitors down. Officials said no one was injured. The film had to be canceled once again.

Another well-known case occurred in Essen. Same movie, similar pattern. In the middle of the performance of "Creed III" some young visitors misbehaved, threw snacks, climbed over seats. The cinema operators then asked everyone to leave the cinema hall. For all bystanders probably a rather draconian punishment. 40 people refused, whereupon the police had to move in and enforce the house rules.

It is unclear why there are so many riots in this film, whether inspired by what is happening on the screen or a small adrenaline rush as a result of the exciting fights. The Essen police suspect a current Tiktok trend behind it. The people in the cinemas would show "such anti-social behavior" that the films would have to be stopped at the end. The police also speak of "budding social media stars" and "would-be influencers".
