RKI evaluates variant BA.2.75: the number of corona infections is no longer declining

The number of new infections in Germany has been stable at around 50,000 per day for around a week. According to the RKI, the number of cases will not decrease any further. BA.2.75 poses a lesser risk of spreading.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the long-lasting decline in corona infections in Germany has stopped. The nationwide seven-day incidence, for example, remained relatively stable compared to the week before last, “after it had previously decreased for seven weeks”. This emerges from the Covid 19 report of the Berlin institute, which mainly refers to the previous week.

In addition to the incidence, which is only meaningful to a limited extent, the RKI also looks at a number of other indicators. Even with severe Covid 19 diseases, for example, the downward trend did not continue according to the data. When it came to the number of intensive care patients affected, there was talk of a plateau.

The RKI also reports on the BA.2 subline BA.2.75. The spread of the variant is observed in India, but also in various other regions worldwide. "In the sample for Germany, a total of 51 genome sequences of this subline have been identified since week 25/2022, with 16 detections being made in week 35/2022," writes the RKI. The mutation profile of this variant indicates pronounced immune escape properties. "A growth advantage of BA.2.75 in a BA.4/BA.5-dominated event, as in Germany, is currently not recognizable."

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 46,514 new corona infections (previous week: 42,057) and 230 deaths (previous week: 117) to the RKI within one day. Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems. In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since many federal states do not transmit them to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

The RKI has counted 32,604,993 infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.
