Streaming continues to gain ground: Almost all Germans still watch linear television

Nina Hagen's classic "I'm Glotzing TV" continues to exist. According to a Bitkom study, 91 percent of Germans watch linear television at least occasionally. This is mainly due to the high rate among seniors, but also applies to young people. But especially with them, streaming is gaining in value.

Despite the boom in streaming offers, classic television is still a fixture on the entertainment market. In a survey by the digital association Bitkom, 91 percent stated that they watch classic television at least occasionally via cable, satellite or antenna.

However, viewers are getting older. While almost all senior citizens over the age of 65 (97 percent) still watch linear television, 80 percent of the 16 to 29 year olds still do so from time to time. This is 89 percent for 30 to 49 year olds and 95 percent for 50 to 64 year olds.

For many people, streamed films, clips or series are now part of everyday life. At 75 percent, three quarters of all respondents watch videos online. In 2021 it was still 70 percent. 38 percent of those who stream video online do so daily, and another 46 percent several times a week. Dedicated video streaming portals such as YouTube, Vimeo and Twitch are clearly the most popular. 85 percent of Internet users watch clips and the like there, 6 percentage points more than in 2021.

In addition to the streaming offers of the television stations, all streaming options on various platforms and portals continued to increase in popularity compared to 2021. Although 71 percent still watch programs that have already been broadcast on linear television with a time delay, the offer has lost six percentage points compared to the previous year.

In third place is the streaming of series and films via on-demand portals such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney (61 percent). 4 out of 10 internet users (41 percent) stream videos on social networks such as Tiktok, Instagram or Facebook.

37 percent watch live streams of the current program from linear television channels - a drop of seven percentage points. 1,163 citizens aged 16 and over were surveyed on behalf of Bitkom.
