Suspect arrested: Two dead in Las Vegas knife attack

The US gambling Mecca Las Vegas is shaken by a serious act of violence: a man is said to have attacked several passers-by with a knife. Two people die, six are injured, three of them seriously. The suspect is caught.

Two people were killed in a knife attack on the well-known hotel strip in Las Vegas. Six others were injured, three of them seriously, Police Chief James LaRochelle said on Thursday (local time). Both tourists and residents of the city were among the victims, he said without giving details.

The alleged perpetrator - a man in his mid-30s - was arrested. A large kitchen knife was found at the crime scene as a weapon. The police initially did not comment on the possible motive.

The attack occurred on Las Vegas Boulevard near the Encore and Wynn hotels and the Fashion Show shopping mall. According to the police, the alleged perpetrator tried to flee, but was overpowered shortly afterwards by security guards.

The newspaper "Las Vegas Review-Journal" reported, citing eyewitnesses, that among those attacked were several women in showgirl costumes, which are often seen on the Las Vegas Strip.
