The docuseries "Sofía y la vida Real", directed by David Trueba, which will premiere on HBO Max on June 23, tells the story of Sofía from Greece, "a character subordinate to someone else: a king's daughter, an heir's sister who would never rise to the throne, wife of a king, mother of a king, grandmother of a queen-to-be."

"Those have been his official papers, the ones that explain his figure in the face of History. But that is not the complete reality," the platform explained in a note this Tuesday.

For the first time, a documentary series delves into eight decades of history through "a decisive character when it comes to understanding the evolution of modern European monarchies," he adds.

Queen Sofía has been "essential for the cohesion and survival of the Spanish royal house with her ascendancy, her authority and her professionalism behind the scenes of her family; and, behind the scenes, decisive for maintaining the popularity of the monarchy in a moment as critical as the present".

"Because Sofia has always been there: from the exile of her Greek family to the escape of Juan Carlos to the United Arab Emirates. From the proclamation of her husband as Franco's heir to the enthronement of her son Felipe as king."

This new series of four chapters, has testimonies from journalists who are experts in information from Casa Real such as Rocío Ayuso (El País), Mariángel Alcázar (El Periódico, La Vanguardia) or Carmen Enríquez (TVE).

The statements of Jaime Peñafiel, author of "Sofía's 80 years. Wife, mother and grandmother" and Pilar Urbano, author of "La reina de muy cerca" are collected.

The statements of Eva Sannum, model, businesswoman and ex-girlfriend of Prince Felipe, those of Isabel Sartorius, political scientist and Prince Felipe's first girlfriend; author of "I would do it a thousand times for you" and those of actress Bárbara Rey are included in the documentary.

In the whirlwind of this debate and in a context of extremely high political polarization, "Sofía's formation as queen from the cradle can be decisive in the preparation of her granddaughter Leonor for her accession to the Crown," says the platform.

Because the future of the monarchy in Spain also depends on the emeritus queen, "a character who still raises many questions about her personality, about her influence on fundamental episodes for her family and for the history of Spain, about her way of acting, of to think, to feel."

After the documentary on the former president of the Government, Felipe González, focused on the rise to power of the PSOE and "Saben aquell", a film based on the early years of the humorist Eugenio's career, set in Barcelona in the 1960s and 1970s, Trueba leads this new project produced by Lavinia Audivosual and co-directed by Jordi Ferrerons.
