The weather week in a quick check: heat wave in August - 40 degrees possible

In this weather week, midsummer really picks up speed again. Already on Monday we start August with temperatures up to 31 degrees. In the middle of the week it will be even hotter - 40 degrees are within reach. The muggy air threatens showers and thunderstorms.

August also continues to be extremely hot. This is especially true in the south and south-east - sometimes even the 40-degree mark is shaking again. For the third time this summer. In our latitudes, this is really exceptional. Only from Thursday and especially on Friday does the really intense heat subside.

Because then, together with increasing humidity and mugginess, severe thunderstorms spread. Occasionally with the risk of heavy rain, which on the one hand can lead to local flooding. On the other hand, parts of our country are currently extremely dry. Because July 2022 had less rain than any other July in decades. The national average fell only around 30 liters per square meter - normal would be 70 to 80 liters.

The southwest in particular was incredibly dry at times. In some regions not even one liter of rain per square meter has fallen from the sky. Let's hope that the tide will turn in favor of the rain in August - even if we are now feeling the first heat waves from North Africa.

Night on Monday: Ventilate as much as you can

Especially in the south and in the middle you should use the still rather fresh values for airing before the next heat. Because at lows between 13 and 18 degrees it gets rather fresh again. There are rain showers between the low mountain ranges and the coast. Otherwise it's cloudy, but only in the Alps does some rain fall.

Monday: The calm before the new heat storm

The new week starts sunny and mostly dry, especially on the North Sea and from southern Baden to the Alps. In the rest of the country more clouds and some rain showers are on the way, which can be accompanied by thunderstorms in the west in the afternoon. Highs in the north and west 18 to 24, otherwise 25 to 31 degrees.

Tuesday: Midsummer is rapidly gaining momentum

Overall, the day will bring significantly more sun and hardly any showers. Only at the North Sea there is unfortunately a lot of clouds and occasional rain for holidaymakers. In addition, the summer usually picks up speed noticeably again. Often it will be 26 to 30, in the southwest up to 33 degrees. Only the coasts remain less warm at 22 to 25 degrees.

Wednesday: More and more often 30 degrees and more

The heat increases rapidly again and brings us 32 to 36 degrees, on the Upper Rhine up to 38 degrees. The sun dominates from the south up to the north, where the heat is not quite as brutal. In the coastal area it will be a maximum of 23 to 27 degrees.

Thursday: Heat peak - 40 degrees are possible again

We are heading for the next heat peak this summer. The temperatures are widespread at 33 to 37 degrees. The nation's hotspot on the Upper Rhine is getting even hotter. Values of up to 39, maybe even almost 40 degrees are conceivable here. Only the north-west is likely to be less overheated on hot Thursday. It is very likely that the first showers and thunderstorms will be announced here, which will slow down the maximum values of 22 to 30 degrees.

Friday: Storms are spreading

The east in particular is becoming increasingly muggy at 25 to 30 degrees, and heavy showers and thunderstorms are to be expected in some cases - sometimes with the risk of storms from heavy rain, hail and squalls. Meanwhile, the north and west are already becoming friendlier, but cooler with 19 to 24 degrees.

Weekend: south summery, north not

There are mixed prospects for the first weekend in August. The south will remain sunny at times, with local thunderstorms in the Alps. The whole thing at 24 to 28 degrees. In the northern half, however, it is more changeable, with individual rain showers on the coast at 18 to 23 degrees.
