The weather week in a quick check: low "Magdalene" brings back the winter

Germany starts the new year with record heat and rain. However, the mild weather will not last much longer, because low "Magdalene" will cool down with snow, frost and ice. A winter comeback is already possible at the weekend.

With the turn of the year, Germany has passed the peak of the heat. New records were widespread. Wielenbach in Bavaria took first place on New Year's Eve with 20.8 degrees. But there were also otherwise, up to Lower Saxony and Berlin-Brandenburg, in all federal states at least 18 degrees, with which old New Year's Eve records were broken hundreds of times and all federal states received new peak values. Even at the turn of the year it was still around 18 degrees at midnight. Accordingly, the highest low on New Year's Eve was a good 16 degrees, surpassing the old record by 4.5 degrees!

And that's not all: The record for the warmest New Year's Day was broken at noon - and the January records at a number of weather stations. However, the highest January temperature ever measured of 20.5 degrees is unlikely to be reached.

The very mild currents from southern latitudes on the front of the Atlantic lows are responsible for the extreme temperatures. But that changes in the new weather week.

Deep "Magdalene" moves to Denmark and with it a first rush of cooler air flows to Germany. A trend that will continue in the days to come on the ongoing low pressure highway. However, with a changed gender division in the names. In the new year, the lows get male first names and the highs get female first names.

Meanwhile, the weather shouldn't matter much. The fact is that the mild days are over. From Friday, real winter is possible again in the north-east of our country - with snow, frost and ice. One weather model even offers permafrost. Even snow all over Germany is conceivable at the end of the week. Here is the weather schedule until then.

Monday night: sometimes stormy and wet

Heavy rain is spreading from NRW up to the north. Quite sometimes with 10 to 20 liters per square meter. Quite a rainstorm considering that the whole of January usually averages around 50-60 litres. Meanwhile, there is only a little cloud in the southern half, and the stars are clear for longer in the Alps before occasional haze and fog spread. In the north and in the low mountain range it is much rougher with a sometimes stormy south-west wind. In addition, it cools down to 11 to 1 degree.

Monday: Southeast half is friendly

In the west and north it is still grey, windy and rainy. It only gets quieter in the evening. In the south and south-east, meanwhile, it will continue to be friendly to sunny and dry for longer. The temperatures: windy 9 to 18 degrees with gusts of wind on the mountains.

Tuesday to Thursday: repeated rain and risk of storms

The lows give each other the handle. Again and again showers or heavy rain pull through and it is only temporarily nicer. The latter is especially true in the south, while the northwest half is more or less caught by the rain. Accordingly, rain sums of 20 to 40, sometimes even over 60 liters per square meter are possible in the west and north up to and including Thursday. The wind is also an issue again and again - with gusts of wind, especially in the mountains and on the sea. In the Upper Harz there are temporarily full hurricane gusts. The temperatures change only slightly at 6 to 12 degrees.

Friday and weekend: Winter could make a comeback

It is quite likely that it will become increasingly wintry in the north-east. Even permafrost is conceivable. But ice and smoothness could not only return there. Some of the weather models have snow in almost all of Germany until the end of the week. However, there are also calculations that follow a much milder approach. It is therefore an exciting step for the so-called high winter - the usually coldest time of the year from mid-January to February.
