The weather week in a quick check: Spring starts ice cold, but sunny

March 1st is the meteorological beginning of spring and promises lots of sun. Anyone hoping for milder temperatures will be disappointed - two-digit values only prevail for a short time. And for the weekend, the next late winter bell with snow and cold is already announced.

When on Wednesday, March 1st, meteorological spring begins, it will be a rather cold event. Because the night frost, which has recently become increasingly prevalent, will also accompany us in the new weather week. In some cases there is even a risk of severe frost below minus 10 degrees.

Another constant in the next few days is currently forming over western Europe: the strong high "Hazal", which on the one hand likes to provide us with a lot of sun. On the other hand, the high tends to stretch from the British Isles to southern Scandinavia - with little spring-like implications for us. It thus remains with the north to east current. After all: We definitely feel the power of the sun a bit. And in addition, the sometimes very unpleasant northeast wind is slowly weakening. This means that the spring fever is getting a bit going, at least during the day, and in the middle of the week there are even regional double-digit values.

A development to be savored as much as possible as the next change in the weather positions itself towards the end of the week. But unfortunately not with the change of course towards spring. Instead of Lenz with 20 degrees and more, the next late winter clamp with snow and cold is already announced for the weekend from the north.

At the same time, there is a risk of considerable adversity in other parts of Europe on the edge of our late winter high: low "Zakariyya" is currently bringing showers and thunderstorms in the southwest, especially in southern France, central Italy and on the Adriatic Sea, with gusts of wind at a meager 8 to 14 degrees. On Monday, Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca could also experience gusts of wind and, according to some weather models, even hurricane gusts of more than 120 km/h. On Tuesday, the focus is also still on southern France and the Balearic Islands. Only then should the low weaken significantly. And so it's now a quick run through the weather in our latitudes. Here are the details:

Monday night: Some snow and partly icy chilly wind

The last flakes with the corresponding smoothness are on the way in the Alps and Ore Mountains. Otherwise it will be loosely cloudy to clear and frosty. It cools down to values between 0 degrees directly at the sea and minus 10 degrees in the mountains. Due to the sometimes brisk to stormy wind, the whole thing feels even more icy. The perceived temperature, the so-called wind chill, tends to be between minus 3 and minus 10 degrees on Monday mornings. On the higher mountains sometimes even around minus 15 to minus 20 degrees!

Monday: Lots of sun after a cold start

After a frosty start, the sun is usually really good in the race. Only in the southeast are a few snowflakes still falling from compact clouds. But there isn't too much left. Instead, however, the sometimes very unpleasant wind remains - especially in the south-west. In addition, the temperatures reach between minus 1 and plus 7 degrees. Whereby it is mildest between the North Sea and the Upper Rhine.

Tuesday to Thursday: Calm high pressure weather with sun and fog

A relaxing time is ahead of us. And so the sun dominates quite widely. However, there will be a few exceptions. In some places, fog and high fog are quite persistent. This is especially true in the foggy conditions in the south. But the center and parts of the north also have to reckon with increasingly obtrusive gray. Temperatures will reach 0 to 8 degrees on Tuesday and 3 to 11 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. At night it remains supercooled with frost or ground frost.

Friday and weekend: cold air slide from the north

Our high will probably give way across the Atlantic towards Iceland. A course setting that should open up a decent chute of cold air over Scandinavia to Germany. The details are still uncertain, but: with a northerly current trend, this is of course anything but an early spring development. Depending on the weather model, snow all the way down is possible again on the first weekend in March. And even a closed snow cover cannot be ruled out in some cases. In short: It could still be a tough struggle for spring this year.
