Anyone who saw Beyonce perform at the Grammy Awards had a feeling that Queen Bey’s pregnancy might have impacted her headlining slot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April.
Now it’s official. Citing the advice of doctors, Beyonce is sitting out this Coachella since she’s pregnant with twins, but said she will headline in 2018.
Coachella runs April 14-16 and April 21-23 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. Beyonce was scheduled to be the Saturday night headliner, between Radiohead on Friday and Kendrick Lamar on Sunday.
Here are 5 acts who could take her place.
Mr. Beyonce, a.k.a. Jay Z, was probably going to be at Coachella with his wife, anyway. They have been frequent visitors to Coachella since he headlined in 2010. And that year he played, Beyonce joined him on stage so it was pretty much a given that he would likely show up for her set.
West, who headlined Coachella in 2011, filled in at FYF in Los Angeles in 2015 after Frank Ocean had to sit it out. The rapper has taken some time away from the spotlight after canceling his “Saint Pablo” tour in November after some bizarre behavior on and off stage. Coachella would be an epic comeback.
Green Day has a new record, “Revolution Radio,” and tour dates that would allow them to step up and fill both Coachella dates. They’re playing San Diego the week before Coachella and won’t be back in Southern California until September, when the band will play the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Everyone wants French electronic heroes who dress as robots to play Coachella every year. Maybe this is the thing that brings the duo back to Indio for the first time in more than a decade. Plus, there have been rumors of a tour.
The Weeknd didn’t get top billing at Coachella 2015, but he did play the main stage after headliner Jack White and drew a massive crowd. And this was before “Can’t Feel My Face” was everywhere. He is playing the Forum just after Coachella, which usually means it’s a no-go due to competition clauses, but he does have plenty of time off between April 2 and 25.
Lady Gaga Like Beyonce, Gaga made the Super Bowl a spectacle and she has a new album, “Joanne.” Her tour is selling out like bananas. And since her own tour doesn’t start until August, she’s a viable option. Rihanna Rihanna showed up at the Empire Polo Club to join Calvin Harris at Coachella 2016 and more recently at Desert Trip to be a surprise guest during Paul McCartney’’s weekend two set. Her website doesn’t have any current tour dates listed. Bruno Mars Mars hasn’t yet played Coachella, but it would go over huge. Another Super Bowl halftime veteran, the spectacle factor could be there. His tour doesn’t start until July, either. Katy Perry Perry has new material coming out and will put on nothing short of a show. Her schedule appears to be clear and this means that Left Shark could come back to life as a land shark in Indio.
Taylor Swift Taylor with the good hair has played Coachella’s sister event, the Stagecoach Country Music Festival, but never Coachella. Her current tour calendar is empty, so maybe she wants to show up in the desert in April.
