Matthew Rhys guest stars as an acclaimed author who Hannah (Lena Dunham) writes about, criticizing him for his behavior with women. The two of them meet at the author's apartment, for what turns out to be a fascinating encounter. (10 p.m. HBO)

"The Voice": The almost ever-present competition returns, with Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys. (8 p.m. NBC/8)
 
"When We Rise": Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for his script for Gus Van Sant's "Milk," created this four-night miniseries that dramatizes the fact-based growth of the gay rights movement in the U.S. Van Sant directed the first installment. The cast includes Guy Pearce, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael Kenneth Williams and Rachel Griffiths. (9 p.m. ABC/2)


 
"Taken": In this TV series inspired by the movies, Clive Standen takes over from Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills, the operative with a unique set of skills. (10 p.m. NBC/8)
