Veluwemeer in the Netherlands: German family's canoe trip ends tragically

What begins as a nice holiday trip ends in tragedy: a German family's canoe capsizes on the Veluwemeer in the Netherlands. The mother and father die. Only one of the two daughters is found. The search for the younger sister is still ongoing.

After a tragic canoe accident involving a German family in the Netherlands, a man was found dead, presumably his father. Only one daughter of the family of four has been rescued so far. The police said the dead man had been recovered from the Veluwemeer late Thursday evening. The search for the missing five-year-old daughter continues.

The emergency services assume that she also did not survive. The police in Biddinghuizen, about 75 kilometers north-east of Amsterdam, said that excavators would now also be used. According to the information, the mother and a seven-year-old daughter were initially rescued from the water. Rescue workers tried to revive the woman, but in vain. She died. No one in the family wore a life jacket.

The police have not yet been able to say anything about the cause. The family was out and about in a canoe on the Veluwemeer near the IJsselmeer, a region very popular with holidaymakers. It cannot be ruled out that a faster boat caused the light canoe to shake and then capsize. The canoe was found by a small island.

The seven-year-old daughter was able to cling to a buoy and was quickly rescued. She was admitted to a hospital. The mother was also recovered a little later. The police did not provide any information about the identity of the victims or the origin of the family.
