Smith was married to Sheree Zampino, his first wife at the time. He starred as Paul Poitier in 1993's movie. This young man enters the lives and loves of an affluent couple, Donald Sutherland, Stockard Channing, and Stockard Channing. Trey Smith is named after Zampino, his mother.

Smith wrote in "Will" that his feelings for Channing spilled into real life.
