On October 22, 1926, the illusionist Houdini occurs at the théâtre de Montréal. After the show, he retired, exhausted, in his dressing room. For several days, a pain that stabs the belly doesn't let go. Lying on a couch, he poses for a young artist came to do his portrait. Without warning, a band of students from the university of McGill burst into the room. One of them, named Joselyn Gordon Whitehead, wants to be clever.
