A little vacation is in it: You can save a lot of money when taking a shower

Before the day really gets going, many people have to take a shower. Gladly also extensively. Which is good, but has to be paid for dearly. Because where the most is consumed, the most has to be paid for. If you throttle here, you can save a surprising amount.

We now know that with lots of little tricks, electricity and heating costs can be significantly reduced. It is clear where the most consumption is also where the most savings can be made. This is most evident in personal hygiene, i.e. when showering, as the Stiftung Warentest found out. Whenever electricity is converted into heat, consumption is also high.

Then, of course, the length of the shower time, the water consumption and the water temperature are also important. It is also known that taking a shower is cheaper than taking a full bath in the tub. At least if you don't shower for too long. Irrespective of this, daily full-body cleansing is not necessary for hygienic reasons. In addition, this also means stress for the skin.

Let's stay under the shower. The testers climbed into the wet room with a family of three models. Like many households, it heats its hot water electrically with a continuous-flow water heater. To calculate the energy costs, Warentest assumed an electricity price of EUR 0.34 per kilowatt hour and a gas price of EUR 0.15 per kilowatt hour. With the currently rising prices, the savings are likely to be even higher.

Before it gets wet, an economy shower head was bought. The acquisition costs are around 15 to 50 euros. The family now only uses 7 liters of water per minute instead of 14 liters in the shower. Nobody has to stand under a trickling trickle. Saving heads use various techniques, such as mixing air under the jet to create a pleasant shower feeling. The new shower head alone saves 1,463 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, since the instantaneous water heater has to heat less water. That alone brings savings of almost 500 euros a year.

Instead of the previous ten minutes, showers will now only take six minutes. This reduces electricity consumption by 1170 kilowatt hours per year. Similarly impressive are the figures from the consumer advice center, which has opened a shower bill for singles. According to this, just by reducing the shower time from 10 to 5 minutes, around 300 euros can be saved.

It also makes sense to turn the temperature down a bit. If each of the family of three showers one degree cooler, 108 kilowatt hours can be booked on the credit side.

In total, the family saves 2,633 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. This reduces the electricity costs of the instantaneous water heater by around 707 euros. But even those who heat water with gas can significantly reduce consumption with these tips. Which is also proven by the data from the consumer advice center. If you only shower here for 5 minutes instead of 10, you save almost 250 euros a year.

Important: The preset maximum temperature of the water should not be below 60 degrees. Because at these temperatures, harmful bacteria, legionella, die off. The bacteria find ideal growth conditions at temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees Celsius. At water temperatures above 55 degrees, the growth of germs is inhibited according to the RKI. At more than 60 degrees, the germs die off. Once the bacteria are there, they get into the respiratory tract with the first jet of water, finely atomized - in the bathroom, in the kitchen and wherever the tap is turned on.
