Apply successfully: indicate part-time in your CV - yes or no?

In the CV, applicants usually list the past stages of their professional career. Do they also need to make it clear that they have held a part-time position?

Childcare, parental care, work-life balance: there are many reasons why employees have not worked full-time at every point in their careers. Do they have to make this transparent when applying for a new job?

"Applicants are not obliged to refer to their previous part-time work without being asked," says Alexander Bredereck, a specialist lawyer for labor law in Berlin. However, he points out that the manager could later feel betrayed if the discrepancy to the full-time position was very large.

"Anyone who values trusting cooperation should at least make a subtle reference to their CV," says the specialist lawyer. Part-time work is often mentioned in the job reference. "Then you can save yourself additional hints."

Career consultant Bernd Slaghuis is of the opinion that applicants do not necessarily have to indicate part-time employment or part-time phases within a position as such in their CV.

As he writes in a blog post on Xing, part-time work cannot automatically be equated with less professional experience or specialist knowledge. In most cases, it makes no relevant difference whether someone has filled a part-time or full-time position.

The specialist knowledge and experience of an applicant who has worked part-time can even be greater than that of a full-time competitor. In the end, applicants would score with specialist knowledge, but personality is also decisive in the end.

However, if it is important for you to be transparent with your future employer, Slaghuis advises you to indicate the number of weekly working hours or the percentage of part-time employment after the respective position in your CV.

This sometimes makes sense if applicants have several jobs at the same time on their CV. Or they want to make it clear that they have already worked part-time - if they apply for part-time positions again.
