"Bares for Rares": Bitter bidding war thanks to "Waldi": Law students achieve "crazy" price

The pot looks inconspicuous, but it is made of precious metal: Philipp Bienstein and Dennis Heine, law students from Düsseldorf, come to "Bares for Rares" with a trophy. "It comes from my grandmother," explains Bienstein in the ZDF junk show. For years, the find lay in the basement and even had to be used as a flower vase. Originally, his grandfather brought him back from a fishing trip in Great Britain. That makes expert Albert Maier sit up and take notice.

"It's a winner's trophy for annual deep-sea fishing," says the "Bares for Rares" expert. The prize was founded and awarded in England in 1933. "But the cup is older," says Maier. The hallmarks give it away: it was made in Sheffield in 1916 from 925 sterling silver. "So your grandpa didn't get it for his fishing skills, but later bought it in an antique market."

The two friends would like 280 euros for the trophy. "We calculated that as a material value, which we would like to take with us," says Bienstedt. But the two lawyers miscalculated. Expert Maier names the silver value at 350 euros. Since the trophy is in good condition, its estimated price is even 500 to 550 euros. A price that retailers easily beat thanks to "Waldi".

Walter "Waldi" Lehnertz can only decipher the engraving with the help of Susanne Steiger, but he immediately listens when it comes to fishing. "This is exactly your goods," says Steiger. But Julian Schmitz-Avila made him a challenge: "He's not coming to the Eifel." Accordingly, the bids are already a few seconds above the estimated price. "Waldi" keeps driving the price up. At 680 euros, the dealers breathe through. "Sometimes it's not about the matter anymore," says Schmitz-Avila and offers 730 euros. With this he manages to boot out "Waldi". He gets out, but gets an offer of reconciliation from his colleague. "The next time we go fishing, the winner gets the trophy," says Schmitz-Avila.

Philipp Bienstein and Dennis Heine are happy about the high bid. "We didn't expect that at all, it's crazy."
