Current account and custody account: These banks offer the ideal mix

Two wishes at once? This also applies to financial transactions. A study by FMH-Finanzberatung shows where it is worthwhile to combine the current account at the house bank with a securities account.

Security-conscious investors have been waiting for the turnaround in interest rates for a long time. Now the time has come. In view of the high inflation, however, no real joy wants to arise. Because even if money market and fixed-term deposit accounts are once again yielding income: If you want to generate higher returns, you can't avoid securities at the moment.

The prerequisite for trading funds, ETFs, shares or bonds is a securities account, i.e. an account for booking securities and a reference account. If, like most customers, you want to do your banking with a provider, it is advisable to look for banks that not only offer good and cheap custody accounts, but also inexpensive current accounts.

This year FMH-Finanzberatung sounded out the market exclusively for ntv and put together the best combination offers. In order to appeal to as many savers as possible, the Frankfurt experts differentiated between two models:

In the case of the current account, the FMH primarily assessed the monthly account management costs and the annual fees for GiroCard, debit or credit cards. With regard to custody account costs, the main focus of the audit was on the monthly custody account fees and transaction costs. The experts also assessed whether the custodian banks in the test also enable their customers to save on securities. This is important because newcomers to the capital market usually start their investment careers with an investment savings plan.

Questions were also asked about the benefits that new customers can expect from each individual bank. However, these extras accounted for only ten percent of the valuation, since investors only benefit from them for a limited period of time.

The pleasing result of this year's research: the banks are now offering significantly better conditions than in 2022. Half of the financial institutions examined even achieved the top rating of "very good". Despite inflation, the security fees were not increased and even the new customer campaigns were expanded. This is gratifying and makes the investment business worth considering for the majority of normal customers.

Among the leading providers of hybrid account connections are ING, Meine Bank im Hochtaunus, norisbank, comdirect and Consorsbank. Here, custody account management is free, the conditions for securities trading are right, and new customers can look forward to bonuses or limited special conditions.

Santander, Degussa Bank, HypoVereinsbank, Targobank and Postbank are the most recommended commercial banks with a branch network.
