More than 1,700 poorly housed people, mainly homeless migrants, were directed to the “regional temporary reception centers” set up since mid-March to “decongest” accommodation centers in Ile-de-France. , according to the Ministry of Housing, Wednesday September 20.
In total, 1,760 people have arrived to date in the ten airlocks set up in as many regions (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Grand Est, Normandy, New Aquitaine, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur), the same source specified. These reception centers each have fifty places to accommodate people for a maximum period of three weeks, at the end of which they are directed to different reception structures depending on their situation.

The announcement of this system aroused concerns and questions in the spring from several associations who deplored a lack of transparency on the functioning of these centers, where the State is carrying out in particular an examination of the administrative situation of exiled people.
The government justified these transfers by citing the saturation of the emergency accommodation supply in Ile-de-France, where informal camps resurface at regular intervals. He notably highlighted the drop in the number of hotels ready to accommodate this precarious public given the influx of visitors expected during the Rugby World Cup and the Olympic Games.
In the wake of the announcement, the Abbé Pierre Foundation expressed its doubts about the ability to “find dignified and decent solutions in three weeks” to sustainably lift people redirected to the regions out of precariousness. She was also surprised “at the concordance of the arrival of the Olympic Games and a program which aims to send migrants to the provinces”.
