Microsoft support, a family member in distress or the big prize: When it comes to unexpected calls, fraud is usually involved. But that's not all.
The police are warning of two comparatively new scams that telephone scammers are currently using to get their victims' money or sensitive data. The Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office warns that the perpetrators pretend to be employees of any authority and claim to have intercepted a suspicious parcel delivery that they allegedly had something to do with.
Those affected should critically question every call from strangers, and should not be put under pressure, unsettled or intimidated by threats of fines or costs. The best thing to do is hang up right away, advises the police - and also gives the following tips:
