Heat in Germany: That's why you should always have a drinking bottle for your dog with you

If dogs don't drink enough liquid on hot days, they - like humans - can suffer a circulatory collapse. For this reason, your pet should always be provided with sufficient water in summer. But how much is enough? According to the vet Dr. medical vet Julia Tünsmeyer, there is a rough guideline: Normally, a dog should consume around 20 to 90 milliliters of liquid per kilogram of body weight per day. In other words, a four-legged friend weighing ten kilograms needs one liter of water a day. Even more so on hot days, because when a dog pants a lot, he also loses more fluids. A drinking bottle is essential so that you can take care of your pet on the go. We present various models to you.

On warm days, bacteria can spread quickly in small streams and lakes or even in public water bowls and sometimes cause dangerous gastrointestinal diseases. It is therefore much easier and healthier to always have fresh drinking water with you in a drinking bottle for dogs. Preferably made of BPA-free plastic, which contains no plasticizers, or stainless steel.

1. Petkit drinking bottle

Inside this bottle is a coconut shell activated carbon filter that ensures your dog can drink clean water at all times. According to the manufacturer, the material is BPA-free, and the integrated one-click lock should prevent leakage. The Petkit drinking bottle comes in four colors and two sizes depending on how much water your dog needs throughout the day.

2. Scross drinking bottle

The foldable water cup from Scross is more suitable for small dogs due to its small capacity of 280 milliliters. But it fits in every handbag. According to the manufacturer, the model is BPA-free, lead-free and resistant to high temperatures. In addition, the drinking bottle has a sealed silicone seal (on the inside) so that no water can leak out.

3. Trixie drinking bottle

In contrast to the first two models, this drinking bottle for dogs by Trixie is made of rustproof and easy-to-clean stainless steel, except for the drinking cap. It is available in two different sizes (300 and 750 milliliters). According to the manufacturer, this bottle is also leak-proof and therefore the ideal thirst quencher for longer walks and trips.

4. Drinking bottle by Jormftte

Also available in two different colors, the Jormftte dog water bottle is made from eco-friendly PC and ABS material (food grade). It has a capacity of 550 millimeters and has a silicone sealing ring so that no liquid can escape when the bottle is closed.

5. Asobu drinking bottle

The special thing about this insulated stainless steel water bottle from Asobu is that it is a drinking and dog bowl in one: in addition to 945 milliliters of water, the lower part can be removed and used as a feeding and drinking point. However, the disadvantage is that your dog cannot drink directly from the water bottle.

In fact, dogs cannot sweat—except on their paws and tongue, though only in small amounts. To regulate their body temperature on hot days, they pant more to cool themselves down. However, this method only helps at temperatures below 35 degrees. However, if they rise above this, which is quite possible during a heat wave in Germany, there is a risk of circulatory collapse. To avoid this, your dog should drink enough fluids, both at home and on the go.

As we just learned, excessive panting on a hot day is perfectly normal for dogs and is not (by itself) a sign that your pet is overheating. However, if the following symptoms are added, you should be alarmed:

In this case you should act quickly and cool down the animal's body in a shady place, for example with a wet towel or sheet. He should also be given fresh, lukewarm (not cold!) water to drink. Once his circulation is stable, you can gently and slowly hose him down with some water, first on the hind legs, then on the front legs. If the dog is about to lose consciousness, you should drive to the vet as soon as possible or call a mobile animal emergency service.
