The rumor swelled for a few days, it is now confirmed. Martin Scorsese's new film, Killers of the Flower Moon, will indeed be in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from May 16 to 27, where the filmmaker had not appeared since After Hours, rewarded with the Prix de la staged in 1986. The official press release, released on Friday March 31, does not specify, and the masters of Cannes feasts persist in their silence when asked, whether the director will be in competition or rather in a non-competitive section.
In any event, Killers of the Flower Moon is, unsurprisingly for the author of Taxi Driver (Palme d'or in 1976), a squeaky film, closely touching on the madness and violence of American history. This western – whose title evokes for moviegoers the mythical The Honeymoon Killers (Les Killers de la lune de miel) directed in 1970 by Leonard Kastle (1929-2011) – will indeed stage a series of murders committed in the years 1920 in the Osage Indian community, when a deposit of black gold had been discovered on its territory and enriched the community. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons will be there, pardon a little, in action, which will not spoil anything both for the film and for the hot climb of the steps which will be dedicated to it on Friday May 20.
Killers of the Flower Moon, inspired by journalist and writer David Grann's best-selling book and written by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, is an Apple Originals movie. It will be released theatrically, in partnership with Paramount Pictures, on October 20 in the United States following a limited release on October 6. In France, the film will be released in theaters on October 18. Killers of the Flower Moon will then be available worldwide on Apple TV.
