The series summer 2022: We can look forward to these highlights

"The Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Rings" - the long-awaited and high-priced series from Middle-earth. The Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. In addition, new material from the universes of "Star Wars" and "The Walking Dead". There is no such thing as a summer slump with streaming providers, as you know it from television. From the beginning of August to the end of September, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney will be showing spectacular series material.

The experimental comic series (1989-1996) by Neil Gaiman (61, "American Gods") was considered unfilmable. Netflix has now ventured into a series version. The British author is on board as showrunner. "Sandman" tells the story of the dream king Morpheus. He is captured by a magician in 1916. In 2021 he can free himself. He sets out to reclaim his kingdom. The ten episodes will be available on Netflix from August 5th.

Disney is sweetening the summer holidays with a funny series of short films. The focus is on Groot, the tree-like creature from "Guardians of the Galaxy". As in the second part of the film, we meet Groot's childlike self, who experiences five short adventures at Disney - and puts in dance routines.

For once neither fantasy nor science fiction nor horror: "A League of Their Own" is the serial version of "A Class of Their Own" (1992). As in the movie with Geena Davis (66) and Madonna (63), among others, it's about baseball players. In the eight episodes of the Amazon series, a whole generation of ambitious athletes is the focus.

The parent series "The Walking Dead" will end in Germany on October 3rd on Disney with the final eight episodes. A new spin-off after "Fear the Walking Dead" and "World Beyond" will start in August. The anthology series tells the story of the zombie apocalypse in six self-contained episodes. There is a reunion with well-known characters, but fans also get to know new ones. There is no German start date yet. Disney is likely to be the hottest candidate for broadcast in this country.

Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany, 36) is the cousin of Bruce Banner aka Hulk. Like her cousin, she turns into a green muscle monster when she gets angry. Stupid if you want to make a career as a lawyer and are also looking for great love. The "Avengers" Hulk Mark Ruffalo (54) is also part of the Marvel comedy series. There are nine episodes on Disney.

It's been more than three years since the successful series "Game of Thrones" came to an end. Now there is new material. "House of the Dragon" is based on the book of the same name by George RR Martin (73) and tells the story before "GoT". The prequel takes place 200 years before the action of the hit series. It is about the endangered reign of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine, 48).

The series will start on August 21 in the USA on the "Game of Thrones" regular channel HBO. A day later, the first episode in this country can be seen, like "GoT" on Sky Atlantic. Another of the ten episodes follows every week. "House of the Dragon" is also available in the stream on Sky's own service Wow.

Shortly after the "Game of Thrones" prequel, the next big fantasy series starts. "The Rings of Power" also takes place before the known events of the mother material: 1,000 years before Frodo's destruction of the One Ring. Knights like the Elf Galadriel fight against Sauron. The evil wizard regains more power after being expelled. The eight episodes of the first season will air weekly on Amazon Prime Video starting September 2nd. The streaming service reportedly spent $250 million on the rights alone. The production is said to have devoured another good 500 million.

What The Lord of the Rings is to Amazon and Game of Thrones is to HBO, Star Wars is to Disney. The latest series from the Star Warrior universe is "Andor". And it's a prequel too. It tells the story of Cassian Andor from the movie "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016). As in the film, the main actor is Diego Luna (42). The series consists of twelve episodes, the first three of which will be available at Disney on September 21st.
