Venice Film Festival: These films compete for the Golden Lion

The program for the Venice International Festival 2022 is set. And that's what it's all about. Rarely before have so many dazzling, star-studded films entered the official competition for the Golden Lion.

On August 31, "White Noise" opens the festival. In the film adaptation of the novel by Don DeLillo (85), Adam Driver (38) plays a father who becomes paranoid not only because of an approaching cloud of poison gas. Directed by Noah Baumbach, who previously directed "Marriage Story" with Driver.

"White Noise" is the first Netflix film to open the Venice Festival. It is also one of four films that the streaming service sends to the competition. Unlike the Cannes Film Festival, Venice has no reservations about Netflix. The three other contributions from the streamer are "Bardo" by the Mexican star director Alejandro González Iñárritu (58), "Athena" by the French Romain Gavras (41) - and "Blonde". Ana de Armas (34) plays Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe.

With Hugh Jackman (53), Venice is expecting a top star on the red carpet. The Australian stars in "The Son," a loose sequel to "The Father" starring Anthony Hopkins (84).

Brendan Fraser could make a comeback in Venice. The "Die Mummy" star, who has been in hiding for a long time, embodies a grotesquely fat man in "The Whale" (53). Darren Aronofsky (53) directs. Like Jackman, Fraser is considered an early Oscar favorite with this role.

The premise of "Bones and All" also sounds grotesque: Timothée Chalamet (26) and Taylor Russell (28) play a young couple with cannibalistic tendencies. The director is Luca Guadagnino (50), who has already shot "Call Me by Your Name" with Chalamet.
