CLEVELAND, Ohio - Paczki Day is growing. As in, it's becoming Paczki Days.
Paczki, the pre-Lenten Polish donuts, deep-fried and filled with everything from fruit to sausage, have long been a local tradition, especially on Fat Tuesday. But in recent years, the tradition has grown, with many local bakeries selling special paczki for the whole month leading up to Mardi Gras. (See the full Paczki Guide here.)
Rudy's Strudel, ground zero for the Cleveland holiday in Parma's Polish Village, has announced several events leading surrounding Fat Tuesday, including details of the main event.
Paczki Day: The fun begins at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rudy's, 5580 Ridge Road. In addition to 25 different flavors of paczki - from prune to apple, vanilla cream, strawberry, mocha and much more - this year's Rudy's will featuring their new Parma-Que paczki. Made in collaboration with Rudy's Polish Village neighbors, Barabicu Smokehouse, the Parma-Que will feature hand-smoked brisket in the savory paczki.
"This one is mind-blowing. This has taken our trademarked savory paczki to new levels," says Rudy's owner Lidia Trempe.
Live music and DJs will kick off the festivities, including the return of Cleveland's one-and-only DJ Kishka. DJ C.Randolph C., Kenny Rybka and Tom Morozcka will also be kicking out the polka jams throughout the day. Dyngus Day Cleveland will also be on-site, searching for the next Ms. Dyngus to be entered at this year's Dyngus Day. Rudy's will also be hosting polka dance instructors, brewers from both the Brick and Barrel and Platform brewerys, the pit-masters from Barabicu and other local vendors.
There will be raffles, a paczki selfie station, babushka-clad girls from Rudy's and much more! There will be a pre-order pick-up tent in the parking lot - 440-886-4430 - as well as a pierogi pop-up and eating contests.
Platform Brewery Paczki Party: Can't make it out at 5:30 a.m.? Platform Brewery, 4125 Lorain Ave., will be hosing its own Paczki Party at 4 p.m. Tuesday in conjunction with Rudy's.
