John Muir fourth graders get a civics lesson with Leadership For Tomorrow program: Sun Postings

PARMA, Ohio - For about 50 students from John Muir Elementary School's fourth grade classes, a field trip to City Hall and the Justice Center Feb. 24 could be the inspiration for a career in public service.

The trip was part of the Leadership for Tomorrow program, co-founded by City Treasurer Tom Mastroianni, Mayor Tim DeGeeter and the late Anthony Zielinski. The trio envisioned a program in which school-age children could learn about municipal government and ignite an interest that could lead to future public service.

The three fourth grade teachers at John Muir were happy to bring their classes on the visit. Karen Mabry, Mary Ravanelli and Brenda Prezenkowski have been teaching at John Muir for many years. Prezenkowski, in particular, has been there for 27 years.

Cox Communications' Marketing Vice President Robert Brill presented a $3,000 check in support of the program.

"As an organization, Leadership for Tomorrow is a catalyst for inspiring students to get involved in their communities and local government," Brill said. "At Cox, we're committed to forging community partnerships that drive civic engagement, and we're proud to offer our support to Leadership for Tomorrow."

"Cox is a great community partner whose generous donation has helped Parma-area public and private school children learn a civics lesson," Mastroianni said.

"I'm grateful to Cox Communications for helping to sustain this important learning experience," DeGeeter said.
