Kent State University names James Hannon dean of College of Education, Health and Human  Services

James Hannon Kent State University 

KENT, Ohio - James Hannon has been named dean of Kent State University's College of Education, Health and Human Services.

Hannon, who will begin on July 1, will earn $220,000 a year.

Hannon currently serves as professor and assistant dean of academic affairs and research for the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at West Virginia University in Morgantown.

Hannon succeeds Daniel Mahony, who left in 2015 to become president of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

For the last two years, Mark Kretovics, associate professor of higher education administration and student personnel at Kent State, has served as interim dean of the college.

Hannon has been at West Virginia University since October 2014. During the prior 10 years he served in various positions with the University of Utah, including director of physical education and sport pedagogy, director of graduate studies  and department chair.

Hannon's research has primarily focused on pediatric physical activity and fitness measurement, academic achievement, and instructional and environmental physical activity interventions in preschool to 12th grade school and community settings.

He was recently named a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Hannon earned his doctorate in teacher education-physical education from Florida State, a master's degree in physical education curriculum and instruction from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor's degree in business administration - human resource management from Southern Illinois University.
