Natural gas leak to blame in Medina apartment explosion that killed two, investigators say

MEDINA, Ohio -- State investigators have determined that a natural gas leak caused the explosion at a Medina apartment building that killed an 18-year-old man and his mother, the State Fire Marshal's Office said.

The explosion happened in the early morning of Feb. 9 at the Medina Village Apartments on Springbrook Road.

Jacob Drake was crushed when the building collapsed. His mother died at MetroHealth following the explosion.

While investigators pinpointed the cause of the explosion, they still don't know the origin or what caused the leak, State Fire Marshal spokeswoman Kelly Stincer said.

The investigation also uncovered a number of problems related to gas lines throughout the apartment complex. A week after the explosion, investigators discovered 63 gas leaks throughout the complex.

Investigators have not determined if the explosion and those leaks are related.
