NYCLU wants anonymity for donors due to death threats

The New York Civil Liberties Union wants to keep the names of its donors secret because of death threats against the group and its supporters, the nonprofit argued in a filing with the state ethics agency.

New state disclosure rules require not-for-profit advocacy groups to reveal their donors, but groups can appeal for an exemption.

Hateful messages the group shared with the Joint Commission on Public Ethics referred to NYCLU members as pedophiles, “perverted rabbis” and “of course, Jews.” The group has been subjected to bomb threats and acts of vandalism as well, the filing states.

Members of the JCOPE were divided on whether they buy the argument and postopned a decision until next week.
