Star Trek Klingon beer released

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Shmaltz Brewing Co. is launching Star Trek Klingon Imperial Porter, the first of a trio of beers themed to the science-fiction show, this year.

The porter is 7.3 percent alcohol and brewed with Columbus and Vanguard hops. It comes in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles.

The brewery suggests the ale's ruby undertones "pay homage to Klingon Bloodwine and fallen warriors who hold honor above life."

Last year, the Clifton Park, New York-based brewery released a pair of ales to commemorate the show's 50th anniversary.

About the 50th anniversary release

A rep says Ohio is among the states receiving the beer, though its distribution will be fairly limited.

Shmaltz is known for its crazy beer names. It has made He'Brew ("The Chosen Beer"), Funky Jewbelation and others.

During the show's several series, Klingons remain a semi-barbarian species who hold the bravery of their warriors atop all else. On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Lt. Worf is a Klingon serving alongside the officers aboard the USS Enterprise. Michael Dorn portrays the security officer.
