100 euros for the year 2023: France throws fuel checks among the people

In France, the tank discount for everyone will soon end. To help lower-income citizens, the government issues checks. They correspond to a discount of ten cents per liter for the average driver.

Shortly before the expiry of a fuel discount in France, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced fuel checks of 100 euros for around half of French households. "We continue to support low-income French people who need their car to drive to work," Borne told RTL. After criticism from the opposition of the lawn mower principle of the tank discount, the government announced that it would limit the aid to those who need it most.

To apply for the new aid, French people must provide their tax number, number plate and a declaration that they use the car to commute to work. The 100 euros are to be paid out in January for the entire year. The state wants to provide one billion euros for this.

A low-income couple with two cars can apply for the fuel check twice, according to Borne. Motorcyclists and scooter riders can also benefit from this. The support corresponds to a fuel discount of ten cents per liter for someone who - like the average Frenchman - drives about 12,000 kilometers a year, said Borne.

In France, due to the rise in fuel prices, there was a tank discount of 30 cents per liter until mid-November. Until the end of the year there is still a discount of ten cents. Critics pointed out that rich motorists also benefited from this - and the bigger and more polluting the car, the more.

The conservative Republicans criticized the fuel check as "less efficient than a fuel rebate". The Socialist Party welcomed the announcement, but complained that the unemployed and pensioners were not included. In principle, higher wages make more sense than checks and bonuses, said Socialist faction leader Boris Vallaud on France Inter.
