Death of Jean Raspail, writer and explorer, author of the Camp of the Saints

The consul general of Patagonia is no more. Writer, explorer, adventurer, poet... Jean Raspail marked the French literature of the Twentieth century. Before being an adventurer of words, the man has traveled the lands to be isolated. Thick mustache, bushy eyebrows, a face cut with a knife, Jean Raspail was a stubborn, proud of his position, taking his deep blue eyes his catholic faith and his attachment to the monarchy. An ecologist royalist, utopian, and adventurer. Jean Raspail was a romantic.

To consider the ways domestic life, this is where I was born, at the age of twenty-three years and nine months, on a frosty morning in the spring of the year 1949

Jean Raspail, "The Blue island"

Born on 5 July 1925 at Chemillé-sur-Dême in the Indre-et-Loire, Jean Raspail is a child of the bourgeoisie. Descendant of François Vincent Raspail (which gave its name to the Boulevard that re-establishes universal suffrage in 1848. His father is president of the Grands Moulins de Corbeil, and director-general of the mines of the Sarre. Yet, despite private schools and a strict education, young Raspail has the desire to be elsewhere. Too young to engage in Resistance, it will have to wait until 1949 to take the wide. "To consider the ways domestic life, this is where I was born, at the age of twenty-three years and nine months, on a frosty morning in the spring of the year 1949", he wrote in The Blue island (Robert Laffont, 1990).

The fisherman of the moon of 23 years leaves her world of comfort for adventure. A fully equipped youth a harbinger of 30 years of traveling around the globe, with threatened peoples and the borders of hostile lands. He put his bag in the Land of Fire, the Caribbean, Alaska, at the edge of lake Titicaca or even to Macau and has been reported to be guides and stories. Adventurer of the words and the land isolated, his early books are stories. His first real novel, The Wind of the pines, out at Juillard in 1958. Story written following a trip to Japan. One of these adventures, Raspail fired a quasi-biography, a monument. Me, Antoine of Tounens, king of Patagonia, (Albin Michel, grand prix du roman of the Académie in 1981). Story of a young man of Tourtoirac went, about 1860, to conquer the distant Patagonia. Raspail is amused and self-proclaimed consul general of Patagonia. Readers wrote to him to ask him to be naturalized patagons, they want to share this state of mind. The myth is born.

The outrageous Camp of the Saints

Raspail writes to escape. Defender of lost causes, he published in 1986, That remembers the men, following his stays in the Alacalufs, people in the Land of fire annihilated and threatened with extinction by the progress. His work impresses by its strength, stubbornness, and is gaining new readers every generation. It also divides. In 1973, the writer publishes what will become a firebrand: the Camp of The Saints (Robert Laffont). Novel apocalyptic in the France of 2050, confronted with the massive arrival of migrants on its coasts. Prophet? He defended. The debates, they, proliférèrent.

In 2011, the book is reissued. The author adds a preface, punch, entitled "Big Other". In this new edition, he adds in the appendix all pages falling within the ambit of the act. The CEO, Robert Laffont, Leonello Brandolini, says in a foreword that his opinion is not that of the author and publishes it. The author is associated with the extreme right, his words are reported. Daniel Schneidermann will sign a forum of vitriol against the author with the title: "Call racists racists". Readers tranchèrent: 132.000 copies sold to date.

After the Camp of The saints, the man will publish twenty books, much less controversy. The soul utopian the traveller had regained his rights. He went back on his travels at the meeting of the forgotten people. An imaginary fiction of the fertile welcomed by the 2003 Grand prix de littérature of the French Academy for his work as a whole. Ironic for one who had the sense of never having had "the card" from the literary community. Even the 9th art has drawn his emaciated features, and his mustache is eternal. The artist Jacques Terpant adapts his novels of adventure. The author of Me, Antoine of Tounens, king of Patagonia even makes an appearance in the 19th Volume of the adventures of the famous billionaire Largo Winch. The artist, impressed by his physical so british, him has borrowed its traits for a character.

The monarchy at the heart

The fleur-de-lys. Raspail's proudly displayed on his ties. His work was also covered. The famous Sire (1991) (which describes the coronation of Philippe Pharamond de Bourbon in 1999), The Game of king (1976), The King beyond the sea (2000), who have nurtured this love for the monarchy. Deeply christian, the man held to his convictions. In his apartment, the books of the wars of the Vendée, and reminded its attachment to royalist. On January 21, 1993, he organized against winds and tides, a commemoration of the 200 years of the death of Louis XVI, place de la Concorde, in the presence of United States ambassador Walter Curley. In 1971, Raspail had released the Game of the king, a novel where he referred to a man dreaming of his kingdom passed out watching the sea. Braving the storms, the writer has held the cape, has continued to say and write what he believed, without bending. The consul of Patagonia is dead, long live the consul!
