Adequate CO2 savings: Demand for heat pumps is increasing massively

Climate change, Russian invasion and rising gas prices are affecting the heating market in Germany. The demand for heat pumps is increasing noticeably, while gas heaters are less popular. In addition to heating engineers, the environment is also happy because CO2 emissions are reduced.

In view of the rising energy prices, homeowners in Germany invested significantly more frequently in modern heating technology in the past year than in previous years. The number of newly installed heat generators rose by 5 percent to 980,000, as reported by the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH). "Almost a million heat generators put into circulation are an important step in terms of climate protection for the outdated system stock," said BDH President Jan Brockmann - mainly because the proportion of renewable energies has increased.

Heat pumps recorded the greatest growth compared to the previous year with an increase of 53 percent and 236,000 units sold. Heating systems based on biomass, here in particular pellet heating systems, also developed disproportionately strongly with a plus of 17 percent and 89,000 units sold. In contrast, the number of gas heaters sold fell by 8 percent to 598,000 units.

"Here, especially in the first half of the year, there was uncertainty about security of supply and price developments," the association said. According to estimates by the BDH, the lion's share of the newly sold devices - at least 870,000 systems - replaced existing systems. This would save 1.9 to 2.3 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.
