US President Joe Biden announces further arms deliveries to Ukraine at the NATO summit, now the details are becoming known. This increases US commitments to nearly $7 billion. Much of the new aid does not come from stocks.
The US has pledged an additional $820 million in weapons supplies to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against Russian attacks. The delivery includes two NASAMS air defense systems, HIMARS multiple rocket launcher ammunition and four anti-artillery radars, the US Department of Defense said.
The NASAMS air defense systems are manufactured by the US company Raytheon and the Norwegian Kongsberg group and are capable of firing short- and medium-range surface-to-air missiles. They can be used against aircraft, drones and cruise missiles. Much of the new aid does not come from US stocks, but from an agreement with industry.
It is already the 14th armament package with which Washington is supporting Kyiv in the fight against Russia. The new package increases US commitments to arms deliveries to $6.9 billion since the start of the war.
US President Joe Biden had already promised the new aid at the NATO summit in Madrid. Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously announced that Germany was primarily looking to the United States for further arms deliveries to Ukraine. "We always base what we do on the deliveries of the allies, especially the United States. And we will continue to do so," he said in the Spanish capital.
A few days ago, the first heavy weapons from Germany arrived in the Ukraine in the form of seven self-propelled howitzers. Three more systems are to follow. In addition, anti-aircraft tanks, air defense systems and multiple rocket launchers, among other things, have been promised.
