Ambassador summoned again: Tehran denounces "unfounded statements" by Berlin

Under the leadership of Germany, the UN Human Rights Council is investigating violations in the crackdown on protests in Iran. Tehran is furious and repeatedly summons the German representative. The message: Germany should stay out of the affairs of the country.

Because of a UN resolution initiated by Germany to investigate violence in Iran, Tehran has summoned the German ambassador again. "Following Germany's initiative to hold a special session of the Human Rights Council on the latest events in our country, the German ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry," reported the official Irna news agency.

Tehran accused Berlin of "interventionism" and "baseless statements". Iran "will not cooperate with any mechanism established on the basis of this resolution based on a political and instrumental approach," the ministry said, reiterating its "complete rejection" of the text. It also protested against the "unfounded statements made by the German authorities". In the past few weeks, Tehran has repeatedly summoned ambassadors, for example from Germany, Great Britain and France.

Last week, the UN Human Rights Council decided to conduct an independent investigation into the authorities' violent crackdown on demonstrators in Iran. 25 of the 47 member states voted in favor of a resolution tabled by Germany and Iceland at a special session of the Council in Geneva.

Accordingly, an independent international investigative mission is now to document human rights violations in Iran and collect evidence for possible criminal prosecution of those responsible. However, she has little chance of traveling to Iran.

The wave of protests in Iran that has been going on for months now was triggered by the death of the young Kurd Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old was arrested by the so-called moral police because she is said to have worn her Islamic headscarf in accordance with the rules.
