Another attack on a military base?: Explosion shakes Russian Engels airfield

At the beginning of December, the Russian military airport in Engels was the target of a drone attack. Now another explosion occurs on the base. The governor of the region gives the all-clear for the population. The authorities would investigate the case.

At least one explosion occurred last night at the Engels airbase in the Saratov region of Russia. "There is absolutely no threat to the residents... Civilian infrastructure facilities were not damaged. Information about the incident at a military facility is being examined by law enforcement agencies," the governor of the region, Roman Busarqin, told Telegram.

The RBC-Ukraine news agency reported two explosions. Russian news agency Baza, citing local residents, reported that air raid raid sirens wailed and an explosion was heard. The airfield is one of two Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces airbases and the only one capable of accommodating Tupolev Tu-160 heavy bombers. It is located near the city of Saratov, about 730 kilometers southeast of Moscow and a good 480 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. According to the Ukrainian account, von Engels regularly flies Russian Tu-95 and Tu-22M long-range bombers with cruise missiles on board in the direction of Ukraine.

As early as December 5, the Russian air bases at Engels and Diagiljevo were the target of drone attacks. Two aircraft are said to have been slightly damaged. Ukraine has not yet claimed responsibility for attacks within Russia. Such incidents are "karma" for the Russian invasion, according to Kyiv in early December. Experts speculate that Ukraine used modified Soviet Tu-143 and Tu-141 "glider" reconnaissance drones for the attacks.
