Baerbock on "Markus Lanz": "Ukraine must win this war"

The war in Ukraine has now been going on for more than three months - and it could go on for longer. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warns of this once again, this time on the ZDF program "Markus Lanz". In addition, the Green politician formulates a new war goal.

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has once again pledged the people of Germany to a possible long war in Ukraine. Nevertheless, the federal government is trying everything to bring the war to an end as quickly as possible, said the minister on the ZDF talk show "Markus Lanz".

Putin failed in his original goal of taking Ukraine. Now the Russian goals have changed. "You are now fully focused on the Donbass in the manner of a war of annihilation," said Baerbock.

"Russian President Putin wants to continue this war in a brutal manner for weeks and months to come," says Annalena Baerbock. "It mustn't happen that at some point we say: We can't and we don't want to anymore. We mustn't let Ukraine down, because then Putin would have won."

Only the Russian President can end this war, says the Green Party politician. "If he stopped bombing, this war would be over, then Ukraine could live in freedom and peace."

Chancellor Olaf Scholz named a number of weapons in the Bundestag on Wednesday that the federal government had delivered and will deliver to Ukraine. This is not a new moment, Baerbock said when asked by Markus Lanz. This has been mentioned again and again in recent weeks, just not in this short form.

Regarding the growing criticism of the long-lasting arms deliveries, which recently came from the Union, Baerbock demanded: "We must all pull together instead of assigning blame." Both in the federal government as well as in the EU and NATO are acting together. In the federal government in particular, daily checks are made on how the speed of weapon deliveries can be increased - "with the responsibility that it is about a war."

In the end, Baerbock formulated a war goal. And in this she went a step further than the Chancellor. "Russia must not win this war, but must lose it strategically," said Baerbock. Russia wants to destroy the peace in Ukraine. "That's why Ukraine must not lose under any circumstances. That means: Ukraine must win this war."
