Biden and Democrats tremble: Several election deniers win in midterm elections

About 300 Republican candidates running in the midterm elections support "The Big Lie" and believe Donald Trump is the rightful US president. That doesn't seem to bother voters. In the congressional elections, many election deniers prevail.

In the US midterm elections, dozens of Republican candidates who openly doubt the outcome of the 2020 presidential election have already prevailed in the first hours of counting. According to a list by the Washington Post, 79 election deniers, including various members of Congress, won their race in the first four hours after the first polling stations closed. Many more races are still open.

In the run-up to the midterm elections, the newspaper and the well-known US think tank Brookings had identified around 300 Republican candidates for various mandates and offices in the federal and state governments who had joined "The Big Lie". This states that Donald Trump actually won the 2020 presidential election.

To this day, Trump refuses to admit his defeat two years ago. The billionaire continues to spread unsubstantiated claims that massive electoral fraud robbed him of a victory at the time. After technical problems in Arizona, he also sowed doubts about the reliability of the results in the midterm elections.

In the midterm elections in the middle of President Joe Biden's term in office, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate, the second chamber of the US Parliament, will be reassigned. Numerous governorships and other important offices in the states are also voted on.

According to the first results, it is not clear which party will control the two chambers of parliament in the future. Most polling stations are already closed, but the counting of the ballot papers continued in many places. The key state of Pennsylvania already assumes that the count will take several days. Republicans are the favorites in many polls.

The outcome of the election will determine how effectively Biden can govern in the two years to the next presidential election. Currently, his Democrats still have a slight advantage in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. However, if the Republicans only win one of the two chambers of parliament, they can block or at least slow down the Democrats' domestic political projects. At the same time, a successful Republican run could fuel Biden's predecessor Donald Trump's decision to run again in 2024. On Monday he promised a "big announcement" at a campaign closing event for Tuesday next week.
