"Coordinated and planned": Two right-wing militias "decisive" in the Capitol storm

A committee has been working on the storming of the US Capitol in January 2021 for a year. The panel not only charged ex-President Trump again, but also two right-wing militias: the "Proud Boys" and the "Oath Keepers" are said to have been decisive for the attack.

According to the findings of the committee responsible for the investigation of the attack, two right-wing militias were decisive for the storming of the US Capitol last year. Panel chair Bennie Thompson said the Proud Boys marched to the Capitol with around 250 to 300 members to carry out their "coordinated and planned" attack. The "Proud Boys" stormed the first security barriers on January 6, 2021, Thompson said on Thursday (local time) at the first public meeting of the House of Representatives panel.

The second radical right-wing group, the "Oath Keepers", some of whose members came in full combat gear, was also decisive for the storming of the Capitol, Thompson said. Both groups had previously made plans to prevent the peaceful transfer of power in Washington. They would have pulled together supporters and weapons with a view to January 6th. Leading members of the two organizations, including their leaders at the time, were arrested after the storm and charged with, among other things, seditious conspiracy. Most of the process is still ongoing.

The investigative committee also charged ex-President Donald Trump at the hearing. During the session, the panel showed, among other things, previously unpublished video material and excerpts from interviews with former members of the Trump administration. Attorney General William Barr, for example, described Trump's allegations of electoral fraud as "bullshit". Committee members accused Trump of fueling angry mobs with his allegations of fraud. Thompson spoke of an "attempted coup" and warned that democracy in the US was still in danger.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of the then Republican President Donald Trump stormed the seat of parliament in the capital Washington. They wanted to prevent Democrat Joe Biden's November 2020 election victory from being confirmed. The attack on the heart of US democracy shook the country. The attack killed several people and injured dozens.
