Donald Trump famously promised to protect LGBT rights at the Republican National Convention. Trump also invited openly gay speaker Peter Thiel, and went on to win 14 percent of the gay vote. But many pointed to the GOP's anti-LGBT platform and Trump's selection of Mike Pence as running mate as evidence Trump would not stand up for LGBT rights. Now, the White House has rolled back Obama protections for transgender students. Do you trust this administration to protect LGBT rights?
Trump may have talked a good game at the convention, but rescinding federal protections for transgender kids has proved to many that his promises were just that -- talk.thetylt.com
In a Feb. 22 interview, the head of the Log Cabin Republicans says he still has faith in Trump as a pro-LGBT leader -- pointing specifically to his defense of the community during the RNC convention and his affirmation after the tragic mass shooting in a gay Orlando nightclub.thetylt.com
But others noted the full context of Trump's RNC statement -- he actually pledged to protect the LGBT community from Islamic extremists. When he spoke out about the Orlando shooting, critics say it was less about defending the LGBT community and more about attacking and demonizing all of Islam. At no point did Trump pledge to defend them from Mike Pence."As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology."
Today is a reminder: during the campaign, Trump basically only talked about LGBT people when attacking Muslims. https://t.co/rUF59I5Plx-- Daniel Dale (@ddale8) February 23, 2017
In light of this new development, many are calling his promises to the LGBT community empty.
TRUMP: "i will protect LGBT rights"
ME: "you just removed rights from trans children"
TRUMP: "oh now LGBT stands for Lord God Bannon Trump"
Some gay Republicans argue the left's warnings about the Trump administration on LGBT rights are hysterical.

The head of the Log Cabin Republicans listed his top political priorities under Trump, and protections for transgender people did not make the list: "Obamacare, tax reform, death tax repeal, preservation of the second amendment, fighting radical Islamic terrorism....There's more to being LGBT than marriage equality and non-discrimination. We have a tremendous opportunity right now to show the country that LGBT people by and large are not, or do not have to be, single issue voters."

Others contend Trump's action on transgender students proves he was only giving lip service to the LGBT community. If he can't stand up for vulnerable kids, he's not going to stand up for anybody.
So much for that photo op, eh? If you're LGBT and you voted for Trump, you got conned. pic.twitter.com/K7ZWdIVdDO-- Impeach Trump (@RubyCodpiece) February 23, 2017
