Doubts about Kiev's options: European powers are probably forging a peace plan for Ukraine

According to a media report, European NATO members Germany, France and Great Britain are working on a plan that should lead to peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. It includes closer ties to the western alliance, which should strengthen Kiev's back.

More than a year after the start of the war, an end to the conflict in Ukraine is in sight. According to a media report, Germany, France and Great Britain are already forging a plan for peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia: According to this, the three European countries want to tie Ukraine more closely to NATO and give it broader access to modern military equipment, weapons and ammunition "Wall Street Journal" (WSJ).

This is intended to boost Ukraine's confidence and thereby encourage Kiev to start peace talks with Russia later this year, the report said, citing French, German and British officials. The plan is to be discussed at NATO's annual meeting in July.

The background to the move is that the three European NATO powers have growing doubts about Ukraine's ability to reconquer all of its territory, the report says. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a trio meeting in Paris earlier this month that he needed to consider peace talks with Moscow.

China recently launched a peace initiative for Ukraine and published a position paper on the anniversary of the Russian invasion. In it, Beijing proposes a ceasefire and negotiations. However, the Ukrainian President Selenskyj sees no real peace plan in the paper. However, it is "not bad" that China - so far not even ready to condemn Russia's war of aggression - has started talking about Ukraine.

Chancellor Scholz, on the other hand, criticized China's proposals for a peace solution in Ukraine. "From my perspective, there is no recognizable line that says: Russian troops must also withdraw," said Scholz during his visit to India. Otherwise, the advance has "recognizable light and shadow".
