Driving license: will the legal age drop to 16?

Elisabeth Borne has promised to commit to youth. The Prime Minister thus participates in the National Council for Refoundation (CNR) on young people initiated last December. A CNR whose conclusions should lead to a Youth Plan this spring. One of its measures could be the lowering of the legal age for passing the driving license, reports Le Parisien. The government is seriously considering allowing the exam to be taken from the age of 17, or even 16, compared to the current age of 18. This measure is aimed in particular at young people who live far from urban centres. Earlier access to autonomous driving could indeed open up these populations.

Another obstacle is the cost of the exam. The CNR is therefore considering reconsidering the obligation to follow at least twenty hours of driving lessons, a decision which would allow the bill to be lowered. These relaxations, according to a member of the majority, aim to "deal with everyday objects, deal with the absolute irritants which cross all social categories, and which do not need a law". Among the other measures envisaged in this plan for young people, there are preferential rates on train travel, the supervision of online sports betting or the overhaul of student grants.
