Espionage over military training area: Police find no evidence of drone overflights

The Bundeswehr trains Ukrainian soldiers, among other things, on the "Dingo" transporter in Germany. The Ministry of Defense suspects that this training is being spied on with the help of drones. The police are now opposing this. She believes in mistakes.

So far, the police have no evidence that drones have flown over the Bundeswehr troop training area in Wildflecken, Bavaria. "We cannot confirm that there were drones," said a police spokesman in Würzburg. Rather, some alleged sightings of drones turned out to be the taillights of cars or lights of civilian airplanes.

According to the online medium "Business Insider", the Bundeswehr is training Ukrainian soldiers on armored vehicles of the "Dingo" type at the training ground in Lower Franconia. The Federal Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that in the night from September 30th to October 1st drones had repeatedly flown over the area on the Bavarian-Hessian state border. The "Business Insider" had reported about a dozen drones.

The ministry stuck to this statement on Tuesday as well. "Please understand that due to the ongoing police investigation and for reasons of operational security, we are not allowed to provide any further information," said a ministry spokesman. In mid-September, the federal government announced that it would deliver 50 "Dingos" to Ukraine - these are armed wheeled transporters.

As early as the end of August, Russian secret services are said to have tried to spy on the training of Ukrainian soldiers on western weapon systems in Germany. The Military Shielding Service (MAD) noticed suspicious vehicles in the vicinity of the military bases in Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate and Grafenwöhr in Bavaria, from which access roads were probably observed, the “Spiegel” reported at the time. In Idar-Oberstein, the Bundeswehr trained Ukrainians on the Panzerhaubitze 2000, in Grafenwoehr the US armed forces trained Ukrainians on western artillery systems.
