Ex-minister makes a loss: Jens Spahn sells a luxury villa in Berlin for 5.3 million euros

While many people are plagued by existential fears during the corona pandemic, the then Minister of Health is investing several millions in his new home in Berlin. The criticism is great. The hoped-for retreat turns into a trouble spot. Now Jens Spahn draws a line.

In the middle of the pandemic, the then Health Minister Jens Spahn and his husband Daniel Funke bought a villa in the Berlin district of Dahlem for several million euros in July 2020. The CDU politician has now sold the property again, as he confirmed to t-online. "Yes, we sold the house," said Spahn when asked by the portal. He made the purchase at the wrong time. Spahn also admitted mistakes in dealing with the house purchase.

The purchase of the property attracted widespread media coverage. Both the then rumored purchase price of 4.125 million euros and the question of financing were up for discussion. The couple is said to have financed around 80 percent of the house through loans and around 20 percent from the sale of an apartment and equity gains. The CDU politician took legal action against the purchase price and failed.

"The hoped-for retreat has become a source of unrest," said Spahn t-online. In addition to demonstrators and onlookers, Spahn also received unpleasant messages in the mail again and again. "Anonymous mail comes regularly, just recently a package with faeces," said the ex-minister.

According to information from t-online, Spahn and his husband even put a total of 5.5 million euros into their new home for the purchase price, renovation and additional purchase costs. In the end, a loss-making business for the 42-year-old: the house is said to have been sold again through a broker for 5.3 million euros. "Financially we stretched ourselves," said Spahn. "We are no different than many others who are fulfilling their dream of owning their own four walls. Inflation is doing the rest."

"Our happiness doesn't depend on a house. That's why we decided on a clear cut," Spahn continued. The couple is said to be moving out by mid-year.
