For those with statutory health insurance: Additional contributions will increase less than expected

The additional contributions that the statutory health insurance companies charge for 2023 are only to increase by 0.2 instead of 0.3 percentage points. They are then a total of 1.5 percent on average. This is intended to counter-finance a record deficit of 17 billion euros. But things are looking bleak for years to come.

The insured persons of the statutory health insurance companies will face higher additional contributions in 2023 - but according to the central association of health insurance companies, they will be lower on average than expected. So far, it can be assumed that the additional contribution will increase by 0.2 percentage points to a total of 1.5 percent, explained Doris Pfeiffer, chair of the GKV, to the Funke media group.

The health insurance companies remained below the increase of 0.3 percentage points announced by the Federal Ministry of Health. So far, there have been announcements from more than 50 health insurance companies, which together represent more than 85 percent of the GKV members, said Pfeiffer accordingly.

A record deficit of 17 billion euros is expected for statutory health insurance in the coming year. The money is sufficient for the coming year, Pfeiffer warned. "In the years that follow, the situation becomes tricky if nothing happens." Politicians must take action by spring at the latest. Among other things, the head of the umbrella organization demanded that the federal government take over the entire health insurance costs for recipients of basic income.
