Interview with former chancellor in stern: Departing ambassador to Ukraine Melnyk: "Schröder lies to the Germans unscrupulously"

The outgoing Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, accuses former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of loyalty to the Nibelungen towards Russian President Putin.

"The fact that Mr. Schröder - despite Russia's war of annihilation against Ukraine - undeterredly flaunts his loyalty to the Nibelungen for war criminals Putin and continues to cynically promote Moscow's interests in Germany is shameful," Melnyk told stern. In doing so, he reacted to statements made by Schröder in a stern interview. In it, the former Chancellor and later lobbyist for Russian gas companies said, among other things, that Russia was ready for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine conflict; he also blamed Siemens for the fact that Russia was currently only able to supply a small amount of gas to Germany.

The worst thing, said Melnyk, was "that Mr. Schröder unscrupulously lies to the Germans by advertising this top lobbyist to Putin for Nord Stream 2 and giving the absolutely wrong impression that putting this pipeline into operation would guarantee the gas supply in Germany." . This is an illusion. "Because for Putin, the gas was and will not be a raw material, but a perfidious geopolitical weapon that the Kremlin ruler knows how to use skillfully to spread panic in German society and stir up fears," said the outgoing ambassador.

Melnyk also repeated his criticism of Schröder's statement that Putin was ready to negotiate. According to the Ukrainian diplomat, this is "utopian". "As long as Russia is bombing Ukrainian cities day and night, torturing and murdering prisoners of war, that's just empty rhetoric." The Ukrainian President Volodoymyr Zelenskyj had previously commented on Schröder's statements in the interview as "disgusting".
