"It's sometimes disappointing": Poland accuses Berlin of poor communication

Dariusz Pawlos is the ambassador in Berlin for the government in Warsaw. In an interview, the diplomat now criticizes the way the German government communicates when it comes to Ukraine. "We can't get appointments for the short, quick vote," complains Pawlos.

The Polish ambassador to Germany has criticized the German government's lack of willingness to talk about Ukraine-related issues. Warsaw is trying to reach an agreement with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, but that's not easy: "We can't get appointments for the short, quick vote. That's sometimes disappointing," Dariusz Pawlos told the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger".

He also defended the pressure on Germany that Poland was putting on arms deliveries to Ukraine - especially in the discussion about battle tanks. The hesitant attitude of the federal government was incomprehensible to Warsaw. "You either help or you don't"

Pavlos also said his country was willing and able to honor its commitments to supply tanks to Kiev. Most recently, doubts had been raised about the condition and operational capability of the tanks from Poland. "There are many reports. We have enough tanks and the contingent we promised is available. To promise tanks and then not provide them would be schizophrenic," said Pawlos.

After Germany's commitment to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyi also called for fighter planes, "long-range missiles" and more artillery to defend against Russia. On the discussion about the delivery of fighter jets, Pavlos said: "Poland is open to anything that helps Ukraine." They understand Ukraine's request and would also be willing to supply Soviet-designed combat aircraft. However, this requires a joint political will on the part of the NATO partners and a courageous decision.
